Healthier Desserts

Feb 12, 2023

I know we are all used to using refined sugar in our desserts but this is detrimental to our overall health (see my last post about sugar by clicking here). But I still have a sweet tooth and love a good dessert. I try to use coconut palm sugar since this has shown to have a lower glucose spike. I will also use natural sugars like honey or maple syrup, but remember, these are still sugar and will still have an effect on your blood sugar so it is important that these things are treats and not everyday indulgences.

One of the things that has been super helpful for warding off my sweet tooth is Hu Kitchen chocolate. It doesn’t have dairy, refined sugar or nasty oils in it. I can eat one square after dinner and feel satisfied and happy.

Here are links to some yummy desserts options that will keep you and the family satisfied and happy while also avoiding the dangerous world of refined sugars. ENJOY!!

Vani’s Almond Butter Brownies - WARNING addictive. LOL these are soooo delicious. The end.

Vani’s Coconut Macaroons - I made these for a work event last year and people went crazy for them! Even people who don’t love coconut loved these. Everyone was asking for the recipe. And bonus - super easy to make. I think I quadrupled the recipe. Make the balls nice and small so you have lots to share!

Gluten Free Apple Crisp - This is my go-to Apple Crisp recipe. It is every bit as delicious as traditional - or maybe even more delicious! I used coconut oil when I made it for thanksgiving last year since my niece has gluten and dairy allergies. I usually skip the greek yogurt because yogurt and my stomach don’t tend to get along and I just go all in on the butter as long as it doesn’t need to be completely dairy free.

Eating Bird Food Samoas - These are amazing! I make these in a double batch and then freeze them. This way I have them in the freezer and can pull out one or two when I want them. They thaw very quickly once outside of the freezer.

PB banana cups - Same as above I will make and store in the freezer. They need a bit more time to defrost. These small things you can store semi-out of sight, out of mind are really good options as long as you can control how many you are eating in one sitting. It’s nice to have something on hand I can indulge in without guilt for when the mood strikes. Also, I do not have a mold, I used muffin cups.

Flourless chocolate zucchini brownies - BONUS this one has veggies. Talk about a good way to sneak veggies into your kids. They will never know. I am a big fan of brownies. I have always made them about once a month around my period because that is what I crave. Now-a-days I am not making them every month, but I like having brownie alternatives to turn to rather than the crap they sell in the store.
Keto Mug Cake - this is a perfect single serve, guilt free indulgence. If you don’t want to make a whole bath of something just make this.

Pumpkin brownies - have I mentioned I love brownies!? These were especially delicious after being in the fridge overnight. So good!

I truly hope that you will enjoy these recipes as much as I have. Let me know in the comments which is your favorite!!
